Ash Wednesday is in the Western Christianity the first day of Lent, which lasts until EasterAsh Wednesday is the Wednesday after Shrove Sunday, and falls between February 4 and March 11, depending on when Easter falls.

The name Ash Wednesday comes from the Catholic custom of having ashes sprinkled over the head or a cross of ashes applied to the forehead on this day. The ashes are a sign of the transience of life and the need for people to repent of their sins and do penance.

The Catholic Church Ash Wednesday Mass is held. Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence, where one should not eat meat. In the Nordic countries, these provisions have a lenient interpretation, where fasting means eating less than usual, and abstinence means giving up a certain form of food, drink or pleasure.
