Blue Monday was originally a term for Monday in Lent, because the liturgical color of this day in the Catholic Church was blue. On this day, the altars in the churches were covered with a blue cloth. For the priests, this meant that Lent began, two days before the rest of the population.
Traditionally, all journeymen were supposed to have a day off every Monday, to "keep Blue Monday". The weekly meetings of the journeymen's guilds were moved to Monday mornings because all meetings on Sundays had been prohibited for a long time. In Norway, Blue Monday was abolished by the Crafts Act in 1839.
It should traditionally Eat extra well to prepare for fasting.
