The bean flour cage

Stabbur from the small farm Bjønnmelen in Ulvilla in Verdal, probably built around 1700.

Comes from: The farm Bjønnmelen in Ulvilla in Verdal.
Age: Uncertain, probably from ca. 1700 or somewhat younger.
To the museum: 1979.

The cage is built of lath timber, the roof is covered with shavings. After the move to the museum, an outer panel has been added to the timber to save it. The original chipped roof from Bjønnmelen has also been maintained with the replacement of chips.

The bean flour cage has an outer dimension of 2,75×2,6 m, then the swallow is taken into account. The entrance door is approx. one meter high, so no adults could enter without bending over. When the cage is so small, it says something about the conditions on small farms and homesteads. And there will be a contrast to Lyngsburet, which comes from a large farm in the village.

In the last years the cage was in use at Bjønnmelen, it was used to store grain. In older times it was food storage, i.e. the small cage was used in the same way as larger cages.

A copy of this cage stands at Almoåsstuggu.
