St. Olav's chapel

Chapel erected by the Catholic Church. Inaugurated on 29 July 1930.

The Catholic chapel at Stiklestad was erected for Olav's jubilee in 1930.

The Catholic Church had already bought the plot of land in 1875, but it was not until the beginning of the 1920s that architect John Tverdal was engaged to design what was to become St. Olav's chapel. The chapel was inaugurated on 29 July 1930.

The furnishings in the chapel are characterized by gifts given for the opening in 1930. Marie Knudtzon gave the altar and a communion bench that she had designed herself. In addition, she is behind a number of the carvings, inspired by the Romanesque style with the Rose of Olav and simple decorations from the Norse decorative tradition as the central elements. Sigrid Undset gave money for the frigate that hangs in the ship and for a number of liturgical vestments. In 1966, the chapel was further decorated with painter Karl Kristian Hildrum's depictions of St. Sunniva and St. Olav, among others.

Today the chapel is underneath St. Torfinn congregation in Levanger and mass is held in St. Olav's chapel every year during Olsok.
