Shortly after his death, Olav was canonised and is later known as St.Olav. He became the subject of worship far beyond the Norwegian borders, and Stiklestad and Nidaros (Trondheim) became destinations for pilgrims.

The battle of Stiklestad represents an important turning point in Norwegian history, marking the transition from -paganism to Christianity.
